Record Number of Nebraska Travelers Projected for 2023 Holidays

By Chase Porter Dec 18, 2023 | 6:00 AM

There could be a record setting number of travelers hitting the roads and skies this holiday season.

Automotive Group AAA projects 8.9 million travelers from Nebraska and other Central-Northwest states will travel 50 miles or more, during the end of year period between December 23rd to January 1st, this is nearly 117,000 (1.3%) more travelers than last year.

Nationally, AAA projects 115.2 million travelers over the same period, a 2.2% increase over last year and the second highest year-end travel forecast in AAA’s records since 2000. This year-end holiday forecast mirrors what AAA Travel has been observing throughout 2023.

The plurality of these travelers can expect to pay about the same or less for a gallon of gas than they did last holiday season, with the average price per gallon in Nebraska last week resting at $2.90.

AAA Spokesman Brian Ortner is offering some advice as so many set out to travel, “Probably the biggest thing to do is the Three P’s: PlanPrepare, and bring your Patience, with record number of travelers on the roads and airports and on cruise lines, you need to build in that extra time.”

During this time, AAA is projecting 7.5 million air travelers nationally. The Auto Group recommends booking flights as early as possible to ensure the best combination of price and availability, along with some parking tips for the airport:

  • Reserve a parking spot ahead of time to save time and money.
  • Choose a well-lit, secure garage.
  • On-site garages tend to be more expensive but offer convenience and peace of mind given their proximity to the terminals.
  • Opt for covered parking if you live in an area expecting inclement weather.
  • Remove valuables from your vehicle.
  • Lock doors and roll up windows.
  • Take a photo of your spot to remember where you parked.
