The Lincoln Police and Fire and Rescue departments are inviting children to a special Halloween event where they can explore emergency vehicles, meet first responders and participate in a mock swearing-in ceremony.

LPD Public Information Officer Erika Thomas says the free event will be held at the Public Safety Center at 66th and Pine Lake Road. The facility is shared by police and fire personnel. The event will feature a touch-a-truck experience with police cruisers, fire engines, the police motor unit, a mobile command post, recruiting vehicles and a historic Dodge Diplomat.

Children will also get a look at the department’s new electric bikes, which were acquired this summer. Thomas says one of the highlights is the opportunity for children dressed as police officers or firefighters to take part in a mock oath of office administered by members of the Lincoln City Council.

Children are encouraged, but not required, to wear police or firefighter costumes. Participants will also have opportunities to meet the police chief and fire chief, interact with first responders and take pictures.

New this year, the Lincoln Police Union is providing custom holiday-themed LPD patch keychains for participating children, along with other giveaways. Thomas says the event is designed to help children build positive relationships with first responders at an early age.

Admission is free and families are asked to RSVP in advance because parking is limited and are encouraged to carpool when possible. Each session lasts about 45 minutes, offering younger children a chance to enjoy a safe, relaxed Halloween experience while learning more about the people who serve their community.
