The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services says four employees were assaulted Wednesday at the Nebraska State Penitentiary by two inmates.  Corrections officials say the incident happened while the staff members were attempting to escort an incarcerated person to a holding area.

They say the individual being escorted and another inmate struck the staff members multiple times with punches. One staff member suffered a serious injury and required stitches for a laceration to the face. Under NDCS guidelines, a serious injury is one that requires urgent medical treatment beyond basic first aid and restricts a person’s normal activities.

Correctional officials say an investigation is underway. The findings will be forwarded to the Lancaster County Attorney’s Office for consideration of criminal charges. The department also says its internal disciplinary process will be used, with possible sanctions including the loss of good time credits.
