Lincoln Parks and Recreation is rolling out a series of free America 250 activities throughout the year to mark the 250th birthday of the United States. Director Maggie Stuckey-Ross says the events are designed to bring residents together in celebration of community and shared history.
“Our parks and neighborhoods bring together traditions and create lasting memories and we’re excited to host special events and initiatives throughout the spring, summer, and fall to celebrate this milestone,” Stuckey-Ross says. “Every gathering and celebration reflects our commitment to building community, honoring tradition, and creating memories for generations.”
Among the activities, no-cost open shelter reservations will be available July 1st through the 5th in city parks. There is a limit of two reservations per day per location and one per person during the event window. Enclosed shelters are not included.
Residents can also take part in a no-cost pool day on July 4th, when admission will be free at all nine city pools during regular hours from 1 to 5 p.m. America 250 Bingo cards are available online and at the Parks and Recreation administration office, encouraging residents to visit parks and historic locations across the city.
The first 250 people to submit completed cards will receive a small prize. The department is also launching a tree planting initiative to plant more than 250 trees across Lincoln this year, including Red Oak, White Pine, and Blue Spruce. Residents can participate through volunteer events or by planting street trees through the city’s voucher program.
