What's This Walk All About?

On Friday, June 13th Jack Mitchell will be walking across the city in another ‘Walk of Shame’ because he once again has made a weather guarantee that failed, and now he has to face the consequences. On Monday, April 21st, Jack declared that Lincoln would see high temperatures of 60 degrees or more for the remainder of the Spring and Summer of 2025. Four days later, Friday, April 25th, 2025, Lincoln’s official high was a mere 56 degrees. And while it’s reached at least 60 degrees every day since, it can’t save Jack. He failed. Again.

By our count, Jack has failed this same guarantee and paid his self-offered penance in the form of spending a day walking around his hometown at least five times since 2013. This year, Jack will walk a rectangle-ish route around town, with corners in each quadrant of the city: Northeast (70th and Havelock), Northwest (27th and Superior), Southwest (27th and Old Cheney) and Southeast (70th and Old Cheney).  The route, which you can see above, will total around 25 miles and we expect should take Jack 10+ hours to complete. He’ll start walking from Broadcast House at 44th and O during LNK Today on Friday the 13th and will host the show as usual, but will do so remotely while walking the streets of Lincoln. Also, since he now has hosts Drive Time Lincoln and didn’t get the day off, he’s got a work curfew! He has to be back at Broadcast House at 5 p.m. to do his afternoon show, so no loafing!

To make the day even better, we can all enjoy Jack dealing with the consequences of his own actions even more by using the day to support a great local organization. This year’s walk will support Mourning Hope Grief Center, whose mission is to companion children, adults and families before and after a death loss. Mourning Hope provides grief support groups, counseling, community education, resources and referrals for people experiencing the death of a loved one. Jack feels particularly strongly about Mourning Hope as his father passed away unexpectedly in 2015 on the day after Jack’s Walk of Shame and his final hours with his father were spent on the walk route and celebrating its completion. The experience of this unexpected grief for Jack and his family has driven him to use the walk to help families, and especially children, who are grieving the loss of someone they love.

To that end, there are a couple of ways you can help. First, you can make a “no strings attached” donation right now to support the walk and Mourning Hope at their website if you’re just a good person who wants to support Jack and the walk. If, on the other hand, you think Jack needs to learn his lesson, you can also use your donation to make the walk more embarrassing for him and entertaining for all of us! You (or a group of people/company/organization) can ‘buy’ some enhancements for Jack’s walk with your donation. You can pick a standard option, from picking a song (or the same one over and over again) Jack has to listen to on the remotely-controlled Bluetooth speaker he’ll have on his person at all time during the walk ($25 per song), make him wear some gear of your choice ($100 per half mile), or host a 10 minute pit stop/photo opp at a location or business along the route where Jack is at your service ($250). Or, if you have something different than the standard options in mind for Jack, from a physical challenge to something that will make the walk more hilariously embarrassing or difficult for Jack and fun for us, make an offer with the form above and Jack will consider them on the air leading up to walk day!

And beyond all of that, be sure to spend June 13th (and every day before) listening to LNK Today on 1400/99.3 KLIN from 6-9 a.m. for live walk coverage and Drive Time Lincoln from 5-6 p.m. to hear from Jack after 25 miles! Plus, if you see Jack along the route on the 13th, say hi! Below the map you’ll find estimates on when he’ll arrive at various locations around town. If you have any questions about any of the walk-related activities, contact Jack at JackM@Klin.com!
