With temperatures lowering this week, you may be tempted to increase your heating. But what are some ways you can raise your thermostat without raising your energy bills?

Brenda Johnson of Black Hills Energy spoke to KLIN News and says there are several things you can do to ease your financial burden. “The first one is to lower your thermostat. Keep that thermostat around 68 degrees. Drop it lower than that when you’re not home. If you’ve got a programmable thermostat, those are great things to install so you can have it automatically adjust the temperature when you’re not home or at night.”

Whether or not you have a programmable thermostat, efficiency is also something to keep in mind. Johnson says to “make sure your home is energy efficient. Make sure that you have really well-running home heating equipment. Now is the time to call and get your furnace serviced for winter.”

Regarding your filter, it’s important to install it properly and keep it clean. Having a clean filter that is installed properly is another easy and inexpensive way that you can save money this winter.
