Bennet Firefighters were called to the area of 138th and Old Cheney around 11:00 Tuesday night after several large hay bales caught fire.  Fire Chief Tim Norris says it took about three hours and a lot of manpower to put the flames out.

“Hay fires are really difficult because they keep winding themselves internally. So the only way to actually put out hay bale fires is to roll them out.”  He says Bennet and Southeast brought their grass rigs and tankers and with the help with the help of the farmer they were able to roll out 12 large bales and kept putting water on them until the fire was  extinguished.

He says they were able to save 50 other hay bales.  “Thank you to whoever was driving by on Old Cheney and saw something and called it in, because another half an hour or 45 minutes he would have lost it all.”

He says it’s not known what started the fire.
