Nebraska (25-11) dominated Northwestern (12-18) for a pair of games this weekend, but won’t get the chance for a third Sunday.
The series finale has been canceled “due to COVID issues within the Northwestern program.” The Wildcats just came off a program pause this week after no playing the past couple weekends. The team that traveled to Lincoln was a skeleton crew of the total roster.
The series began with a 12-2 win Friday as the Huskers took advantage of the depleted Wildcats. Nebraska got a run in the second, then tacked on 11 more between the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.
Cade Povich was flawless over 7.0 innings, surrendering just two hits to go with no walks and five strikeouts.
A trio of Huskers notched three-hit days (Max Anderson 3-for-5, Brice Matthews 3-for-5, Griffin Everitt 3-for-4) as the team knocked the ball around for 16 hits. As a team, Nebraska hit .410 for the game.
Saturday ended in another rout, but Northwestern put up a fight for most of the game.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning, before extending that to 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh. That’s when Nebraska’s bats came alive.
The Huskers used four hits and a Wildcat error to bring home six runs and put the game away. Three more were added in the eighth as Nebraska took the win 11-5.
Nebraska again batted over .400 as a team and notched 16 hits. Anderson led the way with his 4-for-5 day, followed by Joe Acker who went 3-for-6.
Luke Roskam and Spencer Schwellenbach each hit home runs.
The Huskers are in Indiana next weekend for a pod that includes two games against the Hoosiers and two against Ohio State. Nebraska is currently first in the Big Ten Conference standings, followed by Indiana (24-11) and Michigan (24-13).
