A group of 30 Union College International Rescue and Relief students and alumni will be heading to Fort Meyers, Florida, on Sunday to spend a week helping area residents clean up damage from Hurricane Ian.

The team will primarily be putting tarps on roofs to prevent additional water damage, helping residents clean out the inside of damaged homes and removing downed trees.

The group will head out early Sunday morning.  Residents can click here to support this and other response efforts. Union’s International Rescue and Relief is a unique bachelor’s degree program designed to prepare students for careers in public safety, emergency management and community development.

In addition to earning an emergency medical technician and several FEMA certifications, students spend five weeks in Colorado training in wilderness survival and rescue, and a whole semester in a developing nation studying global medicine and running health clinics in underserved areas.
