Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and city officials convened today to discuss 21st Century Policing Solution’s work in assessing the LPD. The mayor announced plans for the individual organization to assess the police department in February 2021.

The  nearly-60-page assessment details the group’s observations and conclusions of the LPD’s hiring and training procedures and workplace environment. Police Chief Teresa Ewins remarked by saying the department’s participation in the assessment shows its dedication to improvement.

“We strive for perfection and at the same time understand perfection is a constant process and not simply a destination. Continuous improvement is crucial to modern law enforcement.”

Mayor Gaylor Baird gave a statement thanking 21st Century Policing Solutions and said, “We are committed to ensuring a fair and equitable workplace environment for our entire police department.”

As a result of the assessment, LPD is making numerous changes to how it operates, including in pregnancy leave, recruitment, and its selection process for specialized units.
