Lincoln’s animal control manager says during July they received 49 calls about dogs being left in the extreme heat.   Steve Beale tells KLIN News most of the calls were for animals left in vehicles.

They also received a few calls about dogs being left in backyards during the day.  “While we had a lot of calls about possible problems with people not caring properly for their animals, only two neglect citations were written.”

Beale says in most cases pet owners are cooperative and they remove their animals from the dangerous situations.  He tells KLIN News they would prefer residents leave their animals at home while they run errands.

Beale says pet owners must provide adequate food, water and shelter if they leave their dogs outside.  He also urges people to not walk their dogs on the hot pavement.  “Dogs paws and pads are sensitive to that, so if you are going to take them for a walk try and do that in a grassy area.”

Beale says in July of 2021 they responded to 46 calls.
