For the first time, Juneteenth will be celebrated as a federal holiday.

In Lincoln, the Clyde Malone Community Center is hosting a celebration at Trago Park at 2100 U Street from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Community Center Executive Director John Goodwin tells KLIN News they will have free burgers, hot dogs and water. It is going to be hot so take advantage of the water park while attending the event. The day will be filled with music, entertainment, a bounce house and 45 booths and vendors.

Goodwin says while holidays are always a fun time, it is also important to remember why we celebrate the day. He says, “To acknowledge that it is now a federal acknowledgement, we are moving in the right direction and this is a great way to celebrate and to remind ourselves of where we came from and where we are going. It also gives a piece of education. What is Juneteenth. Many people don’t know why we celebrate this day. This is a great way to learn about history and to understand why we are celebrating. It is one thing to come together to have food and music but why this is a celebration. Why do we remember this day. That is the most important thing and to not forget those who paved the way for us to be able to celebrate this day.”

The event is at no charge and the public is encouraged to attend.
