Overnight House Fire Caused By Tossed Cigarette

By Karla James Apr 22, 2022 | 11:11 AM

A passer-by called to report a house fire around midnight Friday at 55th and Otoe.

LFR arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the single-story family home.

LFR’s Nancy Crist says, “There were two disabled residents that lived in the home. The husband had actually assisted the wife out and they were just outside the home when LFR and LPD arrived.” Both were assisted away from the home to safety. One of the residents was visually impaired.

Two people were taken to a hospital with unknown injuries.

The fire was extinguished and an inspector determined the cause was a carelessly discarded cigarette.

The home is 80% damaged and the dollar amount totals $180,000. Loss of contents is estimated at $30,000.
