For the past 15 years the LPS Extra Mile Walk has helped eased hunger in Lincoln. On Saturday hundreds of LPS students from across the city will gather at Lincoln East High School to raise money and awareness for child hunger.
“Over the years it has helped raise more than $1.5 million to support and address child hunger in our community,” says Machaela Kumke with the Food Bank of Lincoln.
“The funds raised help us to put food in backpacks through the BackPack Program and into the food market selections for the child hunger food market program.”
She says the walk is casual and is just short of a mile. “It’s not a competition, it’s a celebration to raise awareness and to see what happens when you come together,” Kumke says. She says about 5,000 needy LPS students will benefit from the event.
