Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded to a call around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 12th to a home on 32nd and Loveland Drive. The residents could smell smoke but they could not locate a fire.
LFR’s Nancy Crist says when they arrived, they determined the fire was contained to the smokestack of a fireplace but no fire was being burned.
Crist says, “The investigation determined the fire started outside, on the exterior of the smokestack of the fireplace. Fire pit embers had blown out of the backyard fire pit and started the exterior of the chimney face on fire. It is important to note the last time the fire pit had been used was the night before. This reiterates the importance of using a hose or other type of extinguishing agent to make sure a fire pit is out before you leave it.”
Fire did spread to the interior walls. Damage to the home and contents is estimated at $40,000. Four people were relocated but no one was hurt.
