Preparing For Severe Weather Season

By Tom Stanton Mar 21, 2022 | 6:00 AM

Monday marks the beginning of severe weather awareness week in Nebraska. Lincoln-Lancaster County Emergency Management Director Jim Davidsaver says it’s a time for families to prepare.

“We always encourage people to have a plan at home, at work, at school so that if severe weather does pose a threat you’ve got some viable shelter options,”  Davidsaver says.  “Your plan should include a location where all family members will report during severe weather.”

An inexpensive investment that provides a significant measure of safety is a NOAA weather radio. “It will provide the best advanced notice of severe weather and promote seeking shelter in a timely manner,”  Davidsaver says.

Residents are also encouraged to gather supplies that will last for several days after a disaster for everyone living in your home.  Here is a list of items to include in your family kit.  https://nema.nebraska.gov/files/doc/preparedness-kit.pdf.

On  Wednesday there will be a test tornado warning and the outdoor sirens will sound around the county.  Davidsaver says when you hear the sirens take time to review and practice your safety plan.   To track participation, an on-line form is available on the Emergency Management website for people to fill out once they complete their shelter drill. https://www.lancaster.ne.gov/FormCenter/Emergency-Management-10/Tornado-Drill-Report-Form-63
