Nebraska Sweeps New Mexico State

By Kaleb Henry Mar 16, 2022 | 4:43 PM

Nebraska baseball notched a pair of wins in their midweek series against New Mexico State, both in very different ways.

The 7-9 Huskers blasted the Tuesday game wide open with three runs in each of the firs two innings. Two more were added in the fourth inning and four in the seventh.

Those 12 runs were extra cushion as Dawson McCarville spun a dandy. The senior righty gave up just one hit and no runs in 6.0 innings, striking out 10 Aggies.

But the ninth inning saw some young arms get shaky. New Mexico State took advantage of several walks and a grand slam to tack on six runs in the final frame, making the 12-6 final score much more respectable.

Griffin Everitt, Brice Matthews, and Josh Caron all notched two-hit games as the Huskers knocked the ball around for 10 hits on the day.

Game two Wednesday played out much differently.

The Aggies chased off Husker starter Drew Christo after just 0.2, giving up a hit and three walks. The bullpen got out of the first inning without any damage but gave up two runs in the second and another in the fourth.

Nebraska took advantage of a wild pitch to score and move runners up before adding another run, closing the deficit to one run. But the Aggies tacked on two more in the seventh.

Trailing 5-2, Cam Chick hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning. Then in the ninth, a pair of walks set the table for back-to-back singles that would give Nebraska their second walk-off of the week, downing New Mexico State 6-5.

The Huskers got the win despite tallying just five hits to nine for the Aggies.

Nebraska stays home this weekend to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
