Lincoln Police report that over the last two months, their analysts have noticed a marked increase in reported thefts from mailboxes. Thirty-two thefts have been reported from the first of January through February 18th.
There were 8 mailbox thefts reported last year and 7 in 2020.
About 80% of mailbox thefts happened when the red flag is raised on the mailbox indicating there is mail inside. Captain Todd Kocian says nearly $6,000 in outgoing checks have been stolen.
LPD encourages all residents to remain alert about your mail – especially when mailing or expecting financial items like credit cards, checks, or cash.
