The Legislature’s Judiciary Committee was so crowded today that after one hour a break was held to shift those waiting to testify on a bill from room to room.

At issue is State Senator Joni Albrecht’s LB 933, otherwise known as the Nebraska Human Life Protection Act.

Senator Albrecht says. “LB-933 extends legal protection from abortion to every person at the moment of conception if and when Roe V Wade is overturned. Under the Human Life Protection Act, performing an abortion after Roe is overturned will no longer be permitted in Nebraska. There is an exception for a medical emergency to preserve the life of the mother and no woman who seeks or obtains an abortion will be prosecuted, only the abortionist. The Human Life Protection Act is not just pro-life. It is pro-woman, pro-baby, and pro-science.”

Twelve states have already passed similar measures and Senator Albrecht is hoping Nebraska joins them.

Dr. Jody Hendrick is an LBGYN and testified in opposition. She stated, “This bill would place Nebraskans at risk for limiting access to care and causing physicians and other medical professionals to practice defensive medicine out of fear for prosecution for providing such care.”

Supporter and opposition testimony lasted for several hours.
