The focus on Tuesday’s  session in the Legislature focused on the accusations against former State Senator Mike Groene who is accused of inappropriate conduct. The former North Platte senator is accused of taking photos of a staffer without her knowledge.

State Senator Dan Hughes is the chairman of the Executive Board that handles complaints. He stated to the body workplace harassment complaints are handled several different ways. The chairman can meet with both the complainant and the accused to see if an agreement can be reached. If that is not successful, the person accused must be investigated.

Groene was asked to take several actions that included turning his computer and cell phones over to IT. On Friday, the complainant stated the resolution was not agreeable and a formal investigation was called for.

Senator Hughes says he contacted three members of the six member Special Personnel Policy. They included State Senators Tom Briese, John Arch and Anna Wishart. They met Tuesday morning to start an official investigation and will hire an outside investigator as to their policy. He says the investigation will be “thorough, prompt, and continue to protect the complainant’s rights” while insuring the Legislature and the public has confidence in the process. He added it is also important their work be transparent and asked that a report be prepared that will be shared.”

Senator Hughes stated, “I want to stress that if the panel uncovers any evidence of any potential criminal activity, that information will be referred to the Attorney General’s office for appropriate action.”

Senator Hughes also stated that he wanted to stop speculation as to what happened moving forward. He stated, “While the information to date has shown that Senator Groene has acted alone and that no other senators or staff were aware of his actions. If the formal investigation uncovers that more individuals were involved or were aware and did nothing, appropriate action will be taken. The focus of the panel needs to be on the investigation itself.”

The body was then given the opportunity to speak.

Over the weekend, State Senator Megan Hunt requested the Nebraska State Patrol and the Attorney General’s Office investigate. Senator Hunt stated, “My concern is Senator Groene has run away from this. I don’t think he needed to resigned. I think he is missing an opportunity to make amends, to self reflect and to pay a leadership role in improving the institution.”

Other senators who spoke at today’s session included State Senator’s Julie Slama, Patty Pansing Brooks, Michaela Cavanaugh, and Carol Blood.

Groene officially resigned Monday evening. Governor Pete Ricketts will appoint a replacement.
