Weidner Wows as Nebraska Dominates Minnesota

By Kaleb Henry Feb 20, 2022 | 4:04 PM

In just her third start of the season, Allison Weidner decided to truly introduce herself to Nebraska fans.

The freshman from Humphrey, Nebraska, went off for a career-high 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 on 3s and 4-for-4 on free throws. Weidner also added five rebounds as part of her second-straight start for Ashley Scoggin.

Weidner’s career-high also matched the difference in the game: 23 points. Nebraska (20-7, 9-7 Big Ten) dominated Minnesota (12-16, 5-11 Big Ten) 93-70 Sunday afternoon. It is the first time the Huskers have reached 20 wins since 2017-18, and sixth time as a member of the Big Ten.

Nebraska held a slight advantage throughout the first half, leading 41-34 at half time. The start of the third quarter put the game on ice as NU ran out with a 15-3 run. The lead would swell to as much as 30 before the final horn sounded.

Joining Weidner with a career day was Jaz Shelley, though in a different way. The Aussie dished out a career-high 12 assists while adding five points, five rebounds, and three steals.

Alexis Markowski narrowly missed another double-double for the season, scoring 15 points and grabbing nine rebounds.

Issie Bourne (17) and Sam Haiby (14) also scored in double figures.

The Pinnacle Bank Arena crowd also showed their appreciation for a pair of other Huskers. MiCole Cayton hit a couple 3s to fire up the crowd, and freshman Kendall Coley scored all five of her points at the end of the third quarter to get the crowd and the Nebraska bench going.

As a team, Nebraska shot 54 percent for the game, including 10-of-21 from deep. Free throws have hampered the Huskers at times, but in this one NU made 17-of-22.

Down to just two regular-season games remaining, Nebraska heads to Wisconsin Wednesday before hosting Northwestern next Sunday.
