The State Fire Marshal Agency says one person and nine horses died in a fire Thursday at a horse barn near Bennington.  The barn was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived around 6:15 a.m.

Investigators say one person and the nine horses were found dead in the barn.  The identity of the person killed has not been released pending the notification of family members.   Ten other horses were removed from the barn and are being treated for injuries.  The Fire Marshal says the fire was accidental and the investigation is continuing.

The fire was reported early Thursday at Heartland Farms. Waterloo Fire Chief Travis Harlow said one firefighter suffered serious injuries while battling the blaze and was taken to Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy in Omaha. Harlow said several other horses were injured in the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The name of the person who died has not been released.
