The Lancaster County Board of Commissioners has appointed Maria Hatfield as the new director of the Lancaster County Department of Corrections. Hatfield previously served as the department’s reentry and rehabilitation administrator.

She has worked in several roles during her career, including correctional officer, transition officer and sergeant. She also spent nine years as director of the Seward County Detention Center. Hatfield says she plans to focus on supporting staff, improving rehabilitation programs and maintaining public safety.

“I believe that a strong corrections facility is built on dedicated staff, effective leadership, accountability, and respect for the dignity of every individual in our care,” Hatfield says.  County Board Chair Christa Yoakum says Hatfield’s experience developing programs to reduce repeat offenses aligns with the county’s strategic goals.

Board Vice Chair Chelsea Johnson says Hatfield was selected following a nationwide search and began her new role October 20. Hatfield replaces Brad Johnson, who is retiring after 35 years with the Corrections Department, including more than a decade as director. His last day is scheduled for December 18th.

Hatfield was born and raised in Leigh and holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
