Gov. Jim Pillen has declared an emergency for southeast Nebraska following heavy rain and severe flooding. His office says record-setting rainfall was reported across the region, with stranded motorists rescued from flooded roads in some areas.

Pillen signed the emergency proclamation Thursday while visiting flood-affected areas in northern Lancaster County. He joined Nebraska Emergency Management Agency Assistant Director Erv Portis and representatives from the Nebraska National Guard, Lancaster County and the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District to assess conditions and receive a briefing.

The declaration allows state resources to be used in the response and directs state and federal agencies to cooperate with and support Nebraska’s adjutant general, who also serves as NEMA’s director.

NEMA is coordinating with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Small Business Administration and Natural Resources Conservation Service as damage assessments are compiled. Those assessments will help determine whether assistance is available for individuals, businesses and others affected by the flooding, and what level of support they may qualify for.
