No. 1 Nebraska volleyball continued its historical dominance over No. 20 Creighton, as the Cornhuskers swept the Bluejays 25-13, 25-15, 25-19, Wednesday night at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Nebraska is now 25-0 alltime against their in-state rivals. It was played before the largest home crowd ever to watch an NU volleyball match indoors, 15,405 fans.
Middle blocker Manaia Ogbechie was out with illness, so Andi Jackson stepped up to lead the Huskers (8-0) with nine kills and six blocks. Kenna Cogill also shined in her first start as a Husker in Ogbechie’s place, hitting .727 while piling up eight kills and two blocks. Virginia Adriano and Harper Murray also tallied eight kills while Murray added three aces. Nebraska held the Bluejays (5-5) to -.033 hitting for the match.
In set one, Nebraska pulled out to a 14-7 and 16-8 lead. The Huskers finished off the set by winning six of the last seven points. Creighton took their first lead of the match, taking a 4-2 lead in the set. The Bluejays edged ahead, 9-8, before Nebraska took control of the set, scoring 17 of the last 23 points to own the second set.
In the third, Nebraska took an early 5-2 lead before four straight Creighton points gave the Bluejays a 6-5 lead. The Huskers won eight of the next 11 points to open a 13-9 advantage, then ran four points later in the set to open a 17-11 lead. Creighton tallied five of the next seven points to cut the NU edge to 19-16. But Nebraska won six of the last nine points to finish off the match in 1 hour, 32 minutes.
Nebraska is next in action Friday against North Carolina at John Cook Arena. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning at 6 p.m. on KLIN and B-107.3.
