With unusually hot September weather continuing in Lincoln, Lincoln Electric System is reminding customers of several simple ways to keep their homes cooler while reducing energy use.
LES Communications Lead Sally Jarecke said one of the easiest steps is keeping blinds or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day, particularly on the sunny side of a home. Residents can also reduce energy consumption by setting their thermostats to the highest temperature that remains comfortable. “The harder your unit has to work, especially on these hot days, the more energy you’re going to use,” Jarecke said.
LES is also encouraging homeowners to check their outdoor air-conditioning units and remove cotton seed or other debris that could restrict airflow and put additional strain on the system.
Jarecke said furnace filters should be checked at least once a month and replaced when necessary. Residents should also make sure air registers inside the home are not covered by rugs, furniture or other objects that could restrict the flow of cool air.
Closing blinds may be among the simplest recommendations, but Jarecke said it can have a noticeable effect during stretches of hot weather. “It’s such a simple thing to do, but it can really make a difference,” Jarecke said.
