September is National Recovery Month, and a Lincoln substance-use treatment provider is encouraging Nebraskans to take a closer look at the resources available to people struggling with addiction.
Lisa Anibal, executive director of Northpoint Nebraska, which provides services in Lincoln and Omaha, says some people may not realize their health insurance includes coverage for substance-use treatment. “Behavioral health needs like substance use treatment are oftentimes covered in all commercial insurance policies, just like if you were seeking treatment like orthopedic treatment or cancer treatment or anything like that,” Anibal said.
She recommends people check with their insurance providers if they or a family member is considering treatment. North Point also helps families understand their insurance benefits and determine what level of care may be appropriate.
Anibal says stigma surrounding addiction can also prevent people from seeking help. She says some working adults worry about being judged, losing their jobs or damaging their relationships. “We serve teachers, we serve police officers, we serve electricians, nurses, you know, everyone in between,” Anibal said. “Because substance use disorders don’t see the differences in humans.”
Anibal says warning signs can vary from person to person, but changes in someone’s daily life can be an indication that they need help. Those can include problems at work, attendance issues, becoming more isolated or secretive, neglecting responsibilities or having difficulty getting to work or school.
She says people who are concerned can start by talking with their physician or reaching out to a treatment provider.
National Recovery Month is intended to bring greater attention to substance-use and mental health issues and highlight resources available to people seeking help. Anibal says recovery does not simply end when someone completes treatment. “One of the most important components in recovery is managing kind of that ongoing process and that long-term piece to it, because really substance use recovery is a lifelong process,” she said.
Northpoint has an alumni group that holds activities during Recovery Month to help people stay connected and demonstrate that people in recovery can continue to live active, fulfilling lives.
Anibal says Northpoint provides a full range of substance-use treatment, from detoxification and residential care to outpatient services and peer support. The organization has locations in Lincoln and Omaha and provides many outpatient services virtually to Nebraska residents.
