Lincoln Police are warning scooter and e-bike owners to take steps to protect their rides from theft. LPD says 98 scooters and e-bikes have been stolen in Lincoln so far this year, compared with 70 during the same period in 2025.
According to LPD’s latest Safety by the Numbers report, 73 percent of the stolen scooters and e-bikes had an unknown serial number, while 68 percent were left unlocked. Only nine percent of the stolen rides have been recovered.
LPD Public Information Manager Erika Thomas encourages riders to write down their scooter or e-bike’s serial number and keep it somewhere safe, along with other identifying information. She also recommends always locking up your ride, even when making a short stop.
LPD says spending a few seconds securing your scooter or e-bike now could make a big difference if it is ever stolen. The department is partnering with Lincoln Fire and Rescue, Safe Kids Lincoln-Lancaster County and Speedy Pete’s E-Bikes for a back-to-school bike and e-bike safety open house Monday, August 31st, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Speedy Pete’s at 48th and Van Dorn.
The event will include bike safety checks, helmet fittings, trail etiquette and safety information, rules and responsibilities for riders, and e-moto education. Southeast Team officers will also be available to answer questions.
