Nebraska State Treasurer Joey Spellerberg says his office has already returned millions of dollars in unclaimed property to Nebraskans this year and is encouraging residents to see if they’re owed money.
From January 1 through July 15, the Nebraska Unclaimed Property Division returned nearly $13.8 million through more than 11,400 claims, with the average claim totaling about $1,200. By comparison, the state returned about $19.7 million through nearly 20,000 claims during all of 2025.
“Our office is working hard to return unclaimed assets to rightful owners,” Spellerberg says. This isn’t the state’s money, we’re simply safeguarding it until the owners or their heirs come forward to claim it.”
Under Nebraska law, the Treasurer’s Office holds unclaimed property as a consumer protection service until it’s claimed. The assets can include dormant bank accounts, uncashed paychecks, insurance proceeds, stocks, safe deposit box contents, and other forgotten funds.
Since Nebraska’s unclaimed property program began in the late 1960s, the state has returned more than $315 million to rightful owners. State officials estimate one in five Nebraskans has unclaimed property waiting to be claimed.
