For the first time in nearly six decades, the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and the University of Nebraska Medical Center will be measured together in national rankings. The change follows formal approval from the U.S. Department of Education and the Higher Learning Commission, which have recognized a shared accreditation structure between the two institutions.

University officials say the move allows UNL and UNMC to report enrollment, degrees awarded, faculty honors and research spending as a combined institution, bringing Nebraska’s reporting practices more in line with peer universities across the country.

Interim Chancellor Katherine Ankerson says the recognition affirms the strengths already shared by the two campuses and creates opportunities for deeper collaboration, broader educational programs and greater research impact.

The combined reporting structure is expected to boost Nebraska’s standing in national research rankings. Based on the latest federal data, UNL and UNMC would rank 55th nationally in overall research expenditures when measured together, compared with 87th and 131st separately.

University leaders stress the change will not affect the separate missions, leadership or academic programs of either institution. Instead, they say it creates a framework for expanding collaboration in areas including health sciences, engineering, agriculture and data-driven research.

UNL and UNMC shared accreditation from 1913 until 1968 before operating independently for the past 58 years.
