The Lincoln Police Department is stepping up traffic enforcement across the city this summer in an effort to reduce serious and fatal crashes. LPD says officers will conduct a comprehensive traffic enforcement initiative from June 1st through August 31st, with additional officers assigned to monitor high-traffic corridors and areas known for serious collisions.
LPD says the campaign will focus heavily on speeding, which remains one of the leading factors in deadly crashes. Police say warmer weather, summer vacations and increased holiday travel typically bring heavier traffic volumes and more dangerous driving behaviors.
Officers working overtime during the initiative will focus on identifying and stopping drivers who are speeding and committing other hazardous violations. The enforcement effort is being funded through a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
LPD says the federal funding allows the department to dedicate extra officers to traffic safety enforcement without affecting normal emergency response staffing levels.
