Lincoln Police on Friday released the results of a high-visibility traffic enforcement campaign conducted during the first half of May in school zones across the city. The enforcement effort ran from May 1st through the 14th, coinciding with the final weeks of the academic year.

Officers worked overtime during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times to target speeding and other dangerous driving behaviors near schools. LPD says the goal of the campaign was to improve pedestrian safety and reduce crashes in areas where children are most at risk.

Police say several drivers were cited for speeds more than double the posted school zone limit. Among the 117 citations issued were 48 for speeding, 36 for registration violations, eight for seatbelt violations, and eight for other traffic offenses. Officers also made one criminal charge, served one warrant, and cited four drivers for driving under suspension.

The initiative, funded through a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office, resulted in 105 traffic stops.
