Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird announced on Thursday the completion of the city’s new Age-Friendly Community Action Plan, aimed at improving services and quality of life for residents of all ages. The announcement also means Lincoln has renewed its AARP Age-Friendly Community designation through 2029.

“Age-friendly communities enhance personal independence, allow residents to remain in their homes and communities as they age, and provide opportunities for residents of all ages, ability levels, and backgrounds to engage fully in civic, economic, and social life,” Gaylor Baird says.

“Lincoln has long been a city where people look out for one another and work together to build a strong future for every generation. As Lincoln grows and the number of older adults in our community increases, we have a responsibility to prepare for this growth in ways that support health, independence, and social connection for all.”

The plan focuses on improving communication and access to information, transportation options, and housing opportunities for older adults. City leaders say the goal is to help residents remain independent, connected, and active in the community as they age.

The plan includes expanding digital literacy workshops, increasing awareness of community services, and improving access to public transportation. Housing strategies include studying design features and policy changes that can help more residents age in place safely and comfortably.

According to Aging Partners Director Randy Jones, Lincoln is home to more than 58,000 residents age 65 and older, with that number growing by about 1,500 each year. He says many of the projects are low-cost efforts that can have a major long-term impact.
