Lincoln residents will have several opportunities to honor the nation’s fallen service members this Memorial Day.  The Lincoln Memorial Day Observance Association, with help from the Veterans Memorial Garden Advisory Council, is hosting three ceremonies on Monday

The first ceremony begins at 8:30 a-m at Wyuka Cemetery. Activities include a wreath casting from the historic bridge, a parade, the Lincoln Fire and Rescue and Lincoln Police Honor Guard, musical performances, and remarks from community leaders. Girl Scout Troop 20205 will decorate the Grand Army of the Republic Circle.

A second observance starts at 11:30 a-m at Lincoln Memorial Park and Funeral Home on South 14th Street. The program includes veterans groups, a wreath and battlefield cross ceremony, flag folding by Boy Scout Troop 456, and musical selections.

Both morning ceremonies will feature Nebraska Lieutenant Governor Joe Kelly as guest speaker, recognition of veterans, a reading of General John A. Logan’s General Order Number 11, and the playing of taps by Kevin Murray.

The day concludes with a candlelit ceremony at 8 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Garden in Antelope Park. The ceremony will include the reading of the names of Lancaster County veterans who died during the past year, remarks from Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird, and musical performances by Brooklynn Lee England.

If weather becomes an issue, the evening ceremony will move to Auld Pavilion, just west of the garden.
