Lincoln Parks and Recreation has announced several free events and activities to celebrate the United States’ semiquincentennial (250th) anniversary.

Director Maggie Stuckey-Ross says activities are for residents of all ages and will be available throughout the year. “We hope you’ll join us in making this anniversary meaningful and reminding us that, though we come from many stories, we are united as one nation,” she said in a statement.

The events and activities are as follows:

No Cost Open Shelter Reservations – July 1 through 5

No cost reservation of the open picnic shelters located in parks will be available July 1 through 5. Reservations may be made beginning at 10 a.m. April 3. There is a limit of two reservations per day per location and a limit of one reservation per person during this event timeframe.

Enclosed shelters are not a part of this event and pricing for those spaces is available online. Electrical service is available during reservation and keys can be checked out with a $50 deposit one week prior to the reservation at the Parks and Recreation Administrative Office, 3131 “O” St., Suite 300.

To reserve a shelter, visit lincoln.ne.gov/America250 or call the Parks and Recreation Administration Office at 402-441-7847.

No Cost Pool Day – July 4

Pool admission will be no cost on July 4 at all nine City pools during the regular pool hours of 1 to 5 p.m. For more information, visit lincoln.ne.gov/pools.

America 250 Bingo

Residents are invited to play America 250 Bingo by visiting patriotic locations and events throughout the City parks system. The first 250 participants who submit a completed BINGO card will receive a small prize. America 250 Bingo cards will be available at the Parks and Recreation Administration office and online beginning May 1.

America 250 Tree Planting Initiative

Throughout the year, the Parks and Recreation Department will plant more than 250 trees to honor America’s 250th birthday. Residents can help by registering to volunteer, by joining community tree celebrations, or planting a street tree through the Parks and Recreation Voucher Program. A variety of species will be planted including Red Oak, White Pine and Blue Spruce.
