The No. 24 Nebraska baseball team bolted out to a six-run lead and held on to defeat Creighton, 6-5, Tuesday at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha. The victory was the Cornhuskers’ seventh in a row and the 18th out of the last 19 games. It also ran Nebraska’s winning streak at Charles Schwab Field, site of the Big Ten Tournament, to 11 games.
Drew Grego got the Huskers (23-6) on the board with an RBI single to left in the second inning. Mac Moyer followed with a two-run single to left to push the lead to three. In the top of the third, Jett Buck’s RBI double made it 4-0, NU. Dylan Carey hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth to push the lead to five. In the sixth, an RBI ground out by Moyer made it 6-0.
The Bluejays stormed back into the game in the bottom of the sixth. A two-run double by Nate McHugh got Creighton on the board. With two outs, Chris Baillargeon with a two-run double, cutting the Huskers’ lead to 6-4. A two-out RBI single by Rocco Gump pulled the Bluejays to within one, 6-5. Gump stole second and Nick Venteicher walked, but Nick Bowron struck out to end the inning.
Creighton went in order in the seventh and eighth, but in the ninth, Gump reached on an error to lead off the inning, then stole second. But Venteicher struck out, Bowron flied to left, and after Teddy Deters walked, Ben North flied out to center field to end the game.
Carey and Buck led the Nebraska offense with two hits each. Moyer drove in three runs. Gavin Blachowicz (3-1) earned the win, throwing four shutout innings. J’Shawn Unger earned his fourth save of the year, throwing two shutout, no-hit innings.
