A small earthquake was reported, again, near the village of Cowles, Nebraska in Webster County.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports the magnitude 2.5 shake occurred around 6:15 a.m. on Thursday, March 12. The quake occurred at a depth of about 3.1 miles. Cowles is near the Nebraska-Kansas boarder.

This tremor follows a larger 4.1 magnitude earthquake near the same area on Sunday, March 1, reportedly felt by residents as far as Lincoln and Omaha.

Oliver Boyd, a research geophysicist with the USGS, previously told KLIN News the region has experienced a cluster of seismic activity in recent years, with about 17 earthquakes recorded there since 2022. He said Thursday’s shake was likely an aftershock resulting from the previous earthquake this month.

“When you get close to a magnitude of 4 or greater, you’re going to feel it pretty good, especially if you’re right on top of it.” Boyd said, adding that shallow earthquakes tend to produce stronger surface shaking than deeper quakes of similar strength.
