The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday reported the first pediatric influenza related death in Nebraska for the 2025-26 season. Nationally, there have been 52 additional pediatric flu-related deaths this season, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As of January 30, there have been 22 additional flu-related deaths in Nebraska this season.  DHHS says antiviral drugs like Tamiflu should be considered as early as possible for people with flu. For those who are not sick, common preventive measures, along with flu vaccination, can help reduce the risk of getting the flu and other winter illnesses.

DHHS advises avoiding close contact with individuals who are sick, stay home when you are sick and if possible, stay home from work, school, and errands. In addition, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze,  throw the tissue in the trash immediately after you use it and wash your hands with soap and water.
