Nebraska will reportedly promote Brett Maher and Nick Humphrey to share the special teams coordinator role vacated by Mike Ekeler, who moved to USC, according to reports Wednesday. Both Maher and Humphrey were on the NU staff last season, assisting Ekeler.

Maher was the Cornhuskers’ starting kicker and punter in 2011 and 2012, earning Big Ten Kicker of the Year both seasons and Big Ten Punter of the Year in 2011. Maher was 19-for-23 on field goals while averaging 44.5 yards per punt, good for sixth in school history. Maher followed that by making all 59 extra points and 20-of-27 field goals. Maher then went on to an 11-year pro football career in both the NFL and CFL, including five years in the NFL. Meanwhile, Humphrey joined the Nebraska staff after serving with Ekeler at his prior stop, Tennessee.
