The Lincoln Shooting Stars Special Olympics Team will be dipping into frigid waters next month for their annual Polar Plunge fundraiser.

The Parks and Recreation Department is inviting the community to support the team during this year’s fundraiser by participating, donating, or cheering for plungers on Saturday, February 21. The event will take place at 11 a.m. on the north shore of Holmes Lake, 70th Street and Normal Boulevard.

The Polar Plunge is an annual event to support Special Olympics Nebraska by plunging into a lake in winter. Those who run into the icy waters raise money by collecting pledges from family, friends and coworkers. Plungers are encouraged to form teams, dress in costume and post on social media with the hashtag #BeBoldGetCold.

Prizes are awarded for creativity and fundraising. All proceeds from the Polar Plunges go to support the athletes of Special Olympics Nebraska.

“It’s always easier to brave cold temperatures when you have other people willing to brave them with you,” said Colleen O’Brien, Easterday Recreation Center Director, “People are encouraged to dress up in costume, come up with team themes and names, and get the word out for Special Olympics and all the wonderful opportunities it provides for the people of all ages.”

The Lincoln Shooting Stars program provides social gatherings for 11 different sports that promote team building, joy, courage, skills, and friendship. O’Brien told KLIN News that donations from the Polar Plunge help provide uniforms, equipment, tournament related expenses, and special events, all helping support the more than 275 Shooting Star athletes, unified partners, and coaches.
