The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has confirmed four measles cases in Platte County, all limited to a single household, with two cases currently active.

No community spread has been identified, but due to privacy, no further information will be provided.

Immunization is the most effective way to protect against the measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases, said DHHS. Children should receive the first dose of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine between 12 and 15 months of age, followed by a second dose between four and six years of age. DHHS recommends Platte County parents of infants aged 6 to 11 months consult their healthcare provider to discuss the option of early MMR vaccination.

The East Central District Health Department will be hosting vaccine clinics this week.

  • Monday, January 5 from 5-7 p.m. at 4321 41 Ave., Columbus, NE, 68601
  • Friday, January 9 from 4-7 p.m. at 822 15 St., Columbus, NE, 68601

“I encourage all Nebraskans to contact their healthcare provider to check their vaccination status against measles,” said Dr. Sydney Stein, DHHS State Epidemiologist. “If you have not had two doses of MMR vaccine, talk to your healthcare provider or local health department right away.”

Individuals who were present at the following public locations on the indicated dates and times may have been exposed to measles:

  • Shell Creek Baptist Church, Columbus, NE, on December 24, 2025, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Columbus Community Hospital Emergency Department, Columbus, NE, on December 29, 2025, from 2 a.m. to 6:30 a.m.

Those possibly exposed are asked to complete a risk assessment survey. Residents in need of assistance can call 402-562-8969.

If you think you are having symptoms of measles, isolate yourself from others and call your healthcare provider, emergency room, or urgent care before arriving to be tested. Do not arrive at a healthcare facility without giving advance notice unless it is a medical emergency.
