As Year Ends, Nebraska Treasurer Urges Residents to Check for Unclaimed Cash

By Chase Porter Dec 5, 2025 | 1:33 PM

Nebraska State Treasurer Joey Spellerberg wants to return your unclaimed cash for the holidays.

The Unclaimed Property Program within the Treasurer’s office acquires and holds forgotten or abandoned financial assets, like dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance payouts, or safe deposit box contents, in an effort to reunite them with the rightful owner.

The Treasurer’s Office reports the program has returned about $260 million to rightful owners since its inception. This year alone, the state has paid out $16.27 million across more than 16,000 claims. Individual returns have ranged from small refund checks to five-figure stock accounts.

“We want to return that back to you. It’s your money,” Spellerberg told KLIN News. “We’ve had claims worth thousands of dollars, and we’ve had claims worth just a few dollars. But hey—right before Christmas, every bit helps.”

He added that Nebraskans can also visit the Lincoln office, at 809 “P” Street in the Haymarket, where staff can help process claims in person. Claims under $50 require only basic verification. Larger claims involve a few additional steps.

Nebraskans can search for their name or business name for free at NebraskaLostCash.nebraska.gov. Nebraskans who have lived in other states are encouraged to check the multi-state database at missingmoney.com.

Spellerberg reminds residents that there is never a fee to search or file a claim. For questions, residents may call (877) 572-9688, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
