Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird joined local business leaders Wednesday morning to encourage residents to support the community during the holidays by shopping locally.  The mayor also issued a proclamation declaring November 29 as Small Business Saturday in Lincoln and highlighted how shopping locally benefits the city’s economic vitality and quality of life.

Gaylor Baird says that for every $100 spent at a locally owned business, $68 stays in the community and an additional $48 of local business activity is generated.  “Our small businesses create jobs for our neighbors, sponsor our children’s sports teams, host neighborhood events that bring people together, and keep dollars circulating locally,” Gaylor Baird says. “Every time we shop locally, we give back to the businesses that fuel our city’s economic vitality and contribute to our quality of life.”

The news conference was held at Francie & Finch Bookshop just south of 13th and O Street.  Leslie Huerta is the owner and manager and says her small business is thriving.  “Local businesses create third spaces that we rely on to meet, gather, share and celebrate,” Huerta says.  “We say, shop small, shop local and shop often.”

Small Business Saturday will be held in Uni Place November 29 near 48 Street and St. Paul Ave.  Residents will have a chance to support the unique and vibrant small businesses that make Uni Place thrive by taking advantage of special discounts, promotions, and events offered throughout the day.
