The Lincoln Police Department is investigating a fatal crash in southwest Lincoln after a motorcycle collided with an SUV Tuesday afternoon, killing a 17-year-old boy from Lincoln.

Just before 2:45 p.m. on November 18, officers were dispatched to SW 23rd Street and W. South Street for a reported injury crash.

According to LPD Public Information Officer Erika Thomas, a red 2011 Buick Enclave, driven by a 69-year-old Lincoln woman, was on SW 23rd preparing to turn left onto W. South Street. She told officers she believed she heard a motorcycle approaching at a high speed. As she began her turn and saw the motorcycle’s headlight crest the hill, she stopped her vehicle.

Investigators say the 17-year-old rider, operating a blue 2019 Yamaha, then laid the motorcycle down. He slid more than 100 feet before striking the driver’s side door of the SUV. The motorcycle continued sliding for nearly 400 feet before coming to rest.

Thomas said the teen was wearing a helmet. Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

He was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and died several hours later. LPD is withholding his identity pending family notification.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to call LPD at 402-441-6000. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600 or submit a tip at lincolncrimestoppers.com.
