The cruise industry is sailing toward another record year. AAA projects 21.7 million Americans will take an ocean cruise in 2026, up 4.5% from 2025.

AAA spokesman Brian Ortner tells KLIN News this marks the fourth consecutive year of record passenger volume. “Cruising is surging, with travelers booking more voyages and exploring new destinations in record numbers,” he said.

AAA reports that 65% of U.S. cruise passengers are age 55 or older, while 27% are 35–54 and 7% are 18–34. Nearly half of travelers cruise as couples, 20% with children, and 7% solo.

The Caribbean remains the most popular cruise destination, drawing 72% of U.S. passengers, followed by Alaska (7%) and the Mediterranean (5%). Peak Caribbean travel occurs from November through March, while Alaska’s shorter season runs April through October.

Cruise ships continue to grow larger to meet demand, with mega-vessels dominating routes in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, while smaller luxury and expedition ships thrive in Northern Europe and Alaska.

According to AAA, 90% of passengers rate their experience as good or very good, and 91% have cruised more than once.

“Whether you’re dreaming of an ocean voyage, a scenic river cruise, or a land-based getaway, a trusted travel agent can help you navigate the options and find the best fit,” Ortner said.
