The Nebraska Mesonet is 94 high quality, standardized weather and soil observation stations located throughout Nebraska. The network of weather stations started in 1981.
The stations collect air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, solar radiation and precipitation information ever 1 to 2 minutes. Other information include snow depth, soil moisture and soil temperature.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers funded an expansion this year as part of the Upper Missouri River Basin monitoring network.
UNL’s Ruben Behnke, manager of the Nebraska Mesonet, said he would like to increase the number of stations to 200 in the next few years.
