The Nebraska State Patrol says a Grand Island man who fired shots at troopers serving a warrant Wednesday morning had 20 guns and over 5,000 rounds of ammunition in his home. The patrol says 43-year-old Justin Jelinek is being charged with attempted homicide, attempted first degree assault, use of a weapon to commit a felony, resisting arrest and obstructing a peace officer.
Around 6:40 a.m. the NSP Technical Crimes Unit were serving a search warrant as part of a child pornography investigation. Patrol Spokesman Cody Thomas says as investigators attempted to serve the search warrant, Jelinek, was observed holding a shotgun.
“Jelinek initially complied with commands to put down the weapon, but he refused to exit the residence,” Thomas says. “Jelinek then went into another room, retrieved a different firearm, and fired at least one shot toward the troopers at the front door of the residence.”
One trooper returned fire, but no one was struck by the gunfire. A short time later Jelinek came out of his home and surrendered.
