The current federal government shutdown may not immediately disrupt air travel, but prolonged gridlock in Washington could create ripple effects for passengers, according to Steve Glenn, chairman of the Lincoln-based agency Executive Travel.

Glenn said federal employees responsible for airport operations—including TSA screeners and air traffic controllers—are considered essential workers, meaning they will continue to work in order to “protect the public.” But if the shutdown drags on, travelers could see delays.

““Security lines could slow down so that there would be longer lines, and workers may make it clear they’re taking the brunt of this shutdown,” said Glenn. “It’s not uncommon when there are labor disputes, people will slow down the process in the name of safety.”

National parks are among the first travel destinations to feel the effects, with many expected to close during the shutdown. Glenn also warned the passport system could back up quickly.

“Recently, we’ve been able to process passports electronically, which has been a great blessing. But if your getting a new passport, the shutdown could add another 30 days to that process depending on how long that they’re out,” said Glenn. “We’re advising travelers to apply ASAP and pay for expedited service if they can.”

Glenn noted the shutdown’s timing… could be worse.

“We’re actually pretty blessed that it comes after the heavy summer season and before the heavy holiday season. So if there is such a thing as a good time for something like this, it’s coming at a time we call the “shoulder season” in the travel industry, where there is not as much intensity in travel,” Glenn added.

Still, Glenn said this underscores the convivence of working with a travel advisor.

“We’re dealing with hundreds of people traveling every day, so we know the nuances of this industry. We’re in the business of helping people at the worst possible times,” said Glenn. “That’s when we’re supposed to be the easy button.”
