Former Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman says he is not going to enter the race for governor. Heineman told KLIN News Tuesday that family is a very important factor in his decision. He specifically mentioned his 98-year old mother in assisted living in Fremont and his son and daughter-in-law.
“They’ve given us two wonderful grandchildren and we just love being part of their lives,” Heineman says. “They live four minutes away from us and it’s just a wonderful thing and that was the priority that was most impactful on my decision.”
Heineman tells KLIN news despite his desire to spend more time with his family he was close to running again. “It was very close. I almost got the yes. I love being the governor of this great state of ours, I think people know that. I think we did a pretty good job for them.”
Heineman says he will stay involved in politics. “I want to help particularly our younger candidates who are going to run for mayor, city council, county board, for statewide office.” Heineman says he wants to be a mentor to them and help them learn the ropes and do a good job for Nebraska.
Heineman was governor of Nebraska from 2005-2015.
