As the Nebraska football team prepares to face Big Ten opponent Michigan Saturday afternoon, Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach is planning for the best defense against hunger and homelessness. The 29th annual Huskers Helping the Homeless event will be held Saturday and the goal is to raise awareness and funds for their year-round hunger relief and homeless prevention services.
Executive Director Alynn Sampson tells KLIN News volunteers are needed before the game to collect donations in downtown Lincoln. Shifts are 90 minutes long and there are several locations available throughout the city.
“It’s perfect for individuals, families, or groups,” Sampson says. Volunteers receive a donation bucket, signs and a commemorative t-shirt. Huskers Helping the Homeless will be headquartered at Tower Square on Saturday, offering free activities for all ages, such as yard games, cookie decorating, and face painting.
“The money raised during this event supports our operations 365 days a year and brings us closer to our vision of defeating hunger and homelessness in Lincoln,” Sampson says. “Our Huskers Helping the Homeless volunteers are game changers for our guests and our community, and we are grateful for the support.”
Matt Talbot provided nearly 250,000 meals last year through on-site prepared meals and food pantries – a 59% increase over the past five years. An average of 246 onsite meals are served every day, with staff assisting over 3,000 individuals through more than 55,000 outreach and homeless prevention services annually.
